As a result of recent fashion trends and ethnic diversities, many women are wearing heavy earrings which can result in elongation of the pierced hole and of the ear lobe (split earlobe).

An incomplete tear in the earlobe usually starts at the original piercing site and continues downward for some degree. The result is an earlobe hole too large to hold ear studs. In a worst case scenario this can result in a complete split, ‘bifid lobule’ (cleft lobe).

To repair a split earlobe the procedure is relatively simple and is carried out under local anaesthetic. The final result is a thin neat linear scar which generally fades with time and can be so effective that ear piercing of the repaired lobe is possible at a later date.

As repaired earlobes are weaker it is recommended that small stud earrings are worn initially; if heavy earrings are worn again there is a chance that the problem may re-occur.

Please note the Bosham Cosmetic Clinic does not carry out ear piercing and recommends waiting 6 months after the repair.

To repair a split earlobe it takes approximately 20 minutes and is carried out under local anaesthetic with a minimal level of discomfort experienced by the patient.

The torn skin edges are excised in a V-shaped pattern and the fresh edges are then stitched together with sutures which need to remain in place for about a week. No dressing is needed other than an antibiotic ointment.

Our Doctor or Consultant will discuss post-operative care with you in detail and will issue a Post Operative Care Leaflet.

Large holes in the earlobe from the weight of big stud earrings can also be repaired.

Most people can go back to work straight after a split earlobe repair procedure, although you may need to take a short break if you work in a dusty or dirty environment, or your job involves strenuous exercise. For those in cosmetically sensitive jobs, it is worth noting that the stitches will be visible for the first week.

An enlarged earlobe repair will depend on the extent of the surgery required but will be discussed with you during your Consultation.
