As we age, our skin goes through certain changes. It thins and loses its elasticity, causing crinkles and lines to form. In addition, ageing skin has a tendency to become blotchy and freckled, especially if it has been overexposed to the sun.

Skin peels are ideal to freshen up dull and tired skin and are excellent in treating acne. They can remove damaged superficial layers of skin, exposing a new layer of healthier skin, resulting in a softer, more uniform complexion. In addition, a chemical peel may stimulate the growth of new cells, thereby plumping up the skin and helping to tighten it.

At The Bosham Clinic we use light and medium depth peels, Glycolic, Vitalize peel and Easy TCA. These peels create an excellent freshening effect, but won’t remove deep lines because they don’t penetrate deeply enough. However, they will significantly help improve fine lines, particularly those under the eyes. In addition, these types of peels don’t create a waxy or pale look. On the contrary, they give the complexion a fresh, natural look.

Alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA’s) are a group of organic acids that have become popular in the treatment of a variety of skin conditions. We use Skinceuticals system which is well respected. It can be performed on the face, neck, décolletage, back and hands.

This is a highly effective medium peel that is well tolerated by the skin. It is applied in 4 weekly sessions. There is no downtime and you can carry on with your activities as normal. Your skin might visibly peel, but it should be no more than what you would expect from sunburn.

Anybody will benefit from having chemical peels, but people with sun damage, acne and ageing skin will benefit most.

People differ with respect to pain. For most patients fine superficial peels and even medium depth peels are easily tolerable. A mild sensation of warmth and tingling can be expected. To minimize discomfort for some patients, facial nerve blocks can be done, ensuring comfort for the patient.

That depends on the type of peel performed. Superficial peels have no downtime and the skin does not peel after the procedure. Your skin is left with a healthy glow. Easy TCA will cause peeling after about 2-3 days and the skin should be fully healed within 7-10 days. This should however not disrupt your regular lifestyle for long, and you might not need to take any time of work. We will decide in consultation on the strength of the peel.

It is better for the skins healing process, to leave any makeup off for a few days. Light mineral makeup may be applied if necessary.

All peels can be repeated, the frequency depending on the final goal.

Avoiding the sun after a peel is essential. The skin will be more prone to possible UV damage. It will be however safe to go outside as long as a high factor cream SPF 50 is applied. The skin might feel tight and some people might have some light to mild shedding of skin, but it is normally not necessary to have time off.

Depending on the depth of peel, the effect will vary from mild to more dramatic results. If using medium depth peels, and when your skin has completely finished peeling, you will immediately notice the dramatic results of your newly improved complexion. Your skin’s appearance will continue to improve for the next 4-6 weeks, becoming firmer, clearer, smoother, healthier and more youthful looking.
